While swimming involves a lot of movement, it is also characterized by a significant amount of waiting. Swimmers lives at practice revolve around the clock because it tells them how much time they have left before starting to swim again. Macy Stinson (’19) believes that, “ without the clock telling us what to do, swimming just wouldn’t be the same”.

Behind the Scenes: A Morning at Swim Practice

Once they finish the main set, swimmers are free to leave, but many stay a few extra minutes to ‘warm down’, or relax their muscles after a long practice. Ellie MacPherson (’22) adds, “ It feels fantastic. To know that you finished something very difficult and now get to just relax and enjoy being in the water”. Team Sopris finishes their workout at 7:00, and many swimmers get ready to go to school afterwards.

Finally, swimmers move on to the last set of the day, titled ‘Explosion’. The last set is by far the most difficult, and the athletes feel the exhaustion start to set in. Amelie Ogilby (’20) would like it to be noted that by the time they have reached this main set, she hates morning practice, Coach Brandon’s workouts, and swimming butterfly.

Following the team meeting, swimmers jump in the water to begin their warm up. “ Jumping in the water is probably the hardest part of the workout.” Quinn MacPherson (’22) comments, “ Like, it is 5:20 in the morning, you are exhausted, and the last thing you want to do is jump in a freezing cold pool and start swimming. Its hard”.

Before jumping in the pool, the swimmers and Coach Bob Brandon get together to discuss the goals, techniques, and struggles that will be addressed at practice that day. Kristen Davis (’18) states, “ With swimming, half the battle is mental. By discussing our goals before hand, we are better able to focus throughout the workout”.

Prior to beginning the practice, Coach Bob Brandon takes the time to write the workout on the whiteboard, along with the daily trivia question. Brandon says, “ I love seeing the swimmers come in and be challenged. The trivia question allows the challenges to begin before they even enter the pool”.

At 5:15 on Friday morning, the Sopris Swim Team arrives at the Glenwood Community Center, exhausted but ready to begin their workout. Swimmers are already dressed and anxious for practice to start.
